There may be four rounds left of the BT East Region League 1 but Murrayfield Wanderers can all but put one hand on the silverware with a victory over Forrester away tomorrow.
It has been an exceptional season so far for Wandies, winning 13 games and losing just once. Even in that agonising loss on the road North Berwick, Bruce's men were able to salvage a losing bonus point. It speaks volumes about a team who had for years, been stuck in a rut, targeting league survival each season.
Such has been the turnaround that last weekend's 103-7 annihilation of Ross High gave Wandies their 11th four-try bonus point of the year. The ability to score tries almost a will has been a trademark characteristic for a team that has developed such confidence with ball in hand, that enable the team to stay top of the table even when nearest challengers Hawick Harlequins had a game in hand.
A 38-7 half-time lead last weekend didn't necessarily give the impression that Wandies were going to hit the ton by the time they left the Murrayfield back pitches but they did just that. The relentlessness of the team and frequency of the tries made naming the scorers as irrelevant as it was difficult.
A trait that might have crept into a Wandies side of yesteryear with such a lead would have been to relax, become complacent and perhaps let a few soft tries past the defence in the closing stages. This season, it has been exactly the opposite with Wandies, and they showed it last week.
The fact that the side kept on running in tries until the final whistle not only showed they could put in another full 80 minute performance, but that in building as big a winning margin as possible, they were playing the long game.
With the league within reach, it might be natural to think that Wandies have it sown up. But Hawick Harlequins are just seven points behind and know that a late season slip-up from Wandies could be enough to get themselves back into contention.
It's more than a bonus point win lead yes, but complacency hasn't been evident in the side up till now. So why should it change in the last four games?
Closing out a league. It's what makes a team. Wandies know that as long as you keep on winning, nobody can catch you.
